Self-Care is Making You Broke

Self-care has become an excuse to spend too much on yourself, but it's not what you think. We have the concept of self-care all wrong and are often doing ourselves harm in our pursuit of self-actualization.

What is self-care? Self-care is a way of taking care of yourself, which means making sure that your needs are met. It's also about being mindful of what you need at any given moment and having the tools and resources to meet those needs. Self-care can include meditation, eating well, getting enough sleep, and spending time with friends or family.

In this article, we'll explore the true definition of self-care, why it's essential for your mental health and well-being, and how you can start practicing it today.

Self-care has become an excuse to spend too much on yourself

Self-care has become a buzzword. It is frequently employed as a defense to spend too much money on yourself and feel good about yourself simultaneously. Self-care can also be used as an excuse to indulge in activities you wouldn't otherwise be able to afford, but this doesn't mean self-indulgence has become inevitable or even desirable.

Talking about self-care often means indulging in fancy face creams and spa treatments or buying new clothes or shoes because they make us feel better about ourselves (or maybe even look better).

But what does "self-care" really mean? Is it possible to consume something in excess? And if so, how do we know when our indulgences have gone too far?

We have the concept of self-care all wrong.

Self-care is about treating yourself with love; it's about taking care of your body and mind to do good things for you. If a weeklong vacation sounds fun but takes away from necessities like sleep or food, it isn't self-care. It might just be the unhealthiest thing ever!

We can't put self-care on our to-do lists because we don't know how long we'll have before our next paycheck comes in or what will happen if we get sick at work (or anywhere else).

True self-care is delayed gratification.

Self-care isn't something that happens once a month or once a year; it happens every day and everywhere throughout your life. Self-care is about the time and effort you put into it. It's about investing in yourself, which can be challenging when surrounded by other people who don't care to invest in themselves.

Self-care doesn't mean being selfish; instead, self-care means being considerate of yourself first and then all around: family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and even strangers on the street.

1. Pay off your debt

The first step to loving yourself is paying off your debt.

Debt is money you owe someone or something, and it can be anything from credit card bills to medical bills. When we have too much debt, it can feel like there's no way out of our situation because we're stuck with all this extra money hanging over our heads.

The great news is that you can eliminate your debt through a variety of methods without having to make significant sacrifices. By taking control of your finances (and thus your life), you'll feel better about yourself because you'll be able to afford more things and have more freedom in general.

2. Save money

This is another excellent way of taking care of yourself.

By saving money, you can ensure you have enough to cover your expenses and still have some leftovers for emergencies.

Saving money is also a great way of learning how to be more responsible with your finances, and you'll know what it takes to budget properly and make sure you only spend what you should.

3. Invest in your retirement

The most crucial thing you can do for yourself is to put money into your retirement.

When you're young, you can make money and build wealth. However, as time passes, these opportunities become less frequent and more challenging.

If you don't start saving early enough or invest wisely enough to ensure that you have a secure retirement when it comes time for it, then what's left? Regardless of how hard you work or how successful your career might seem now, you won't live forever, and neither will your money.

4. Go to the gym even when you don’t feel like it

Going to the gym can be hard. It's easy to think that you don't have time or are too busy, but it's essential to make it a priority for your health. Getting regular exercise not only helps keep your body healthy and strong, but it also has positive effects on your mental health as well.

Going to the gym improves your mental health: Exercise has been shown to help alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses by increasing endorphins (feel-good hormones) in the brain. Exercise is now considered a first-line treatment for depression and anxiety disorders by many healthcare providers.

It also reduces stress. Getting regular exercise can help you manage stress and reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure and other health problems related to stress.

It even promotes better sleep, which is essential for overall wellness. If you’re having trouble sleeping at night, try exercising during the day instead. Exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality for many people.

5. Eat healthy

Eating healthy is one of the most important things you can do to love yourself.

Eating healthy foods will give your body the nutrients it needs and keep it firm while also helping to build up your immune system, making you less likely to get sick. This can be especially helpful if someone you know has an illness or disease that could be life-threatening.

Eating well can lower cholesterol, lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, lift your spirits, and aid in weight loss, among other advantages. Additionally, it may strengthen your immune system, lowering your risk of contracting an illness.

6. Avoid toxic people

A toxic person brings you down, makes you feel bad about yourself, and overwhelms you.

Toxic people are everywhere. They can be your best friend, co-worker, or even the person you're dating. Toxic people drag everyone down and make everyone around them miserable. They're not only selfish and mean. They can also be abusive and violent, and this kind of behavior causes even more damage than just being mean might do alone.

Avoid toxic people if you want to love yourself more deeply than ever. Don't take advice from anyone who doesn't care about your well-being.

Be careful whom you spend time with if someone makes you feel bad about yourself or makes fun of you in a malicious way. Get away from them immediately and find people who genuinely care about you.

7. Pursue a career that you love instead of one that simply pays the bills

It’s not enough to find a job and settle into it because you've lost some of your passion for what you do. If you're working at something that doesn't interest or excite you on any level, chances are you need a new career.

The first step in finding what truly inspires us is looking within ourselves at our passions:

  • What makes us feel alive?
  • What do we want more than anything else in life?
  • What would make us happy without fail every day for all eternity if only given such power over ourselves?

Once we've gotten clear about these things, there isn't stopping us from pursuing them passionately.

8. Create another stream of income

Having a backup plan is crucial. To do this, one strategy is to start a new source of income.

This could be anything from freelancing on the side, selling items at a garage sale, or starting a blog. You can also get paid for things like cleaning houses or babysitting kids. Just make sure there's something in it for you.

Creating another income stream can help you feel more secure in your financial situation and provide you with a safety net. It can also give you the financial freedom to save for something big, like a new car or home.

9. Take a mental health day every month

If you're feeling overwhelmed, taking a mental health day every month is essential. This could mean taking a long bath, reading a book, or walking just for yourself. You should also set aside time each week to do whatever you want without strings attached.

Reasons why you should take a mental health day

A mental health day is one of the best ways to relieve stress. It allows you to step away from life and enjoy yourself, which will help you feel better mentally.

Taking a mental health day is a meaningful way to care for yourself. It makes you feel good about yourself. It's simple to get caught up in the daily craziness, but taking time out for yourself will help you feel good about what you've accomplished.

You can make better decisions when you're rested. Taking a mental health day is one of the best ways to ensure you make better decisions.

Overall, you'll be a better parent, spouse, and friend because you're more relaxed. You'll have more energy to devote to the people in your life and be less stressed about the tasks.

Conclusion

Self-care isn't a luxury. It's an essential part of being an adult. You can only pay your rent, buy groceries or even walk to work if you take care of yourself first. Your health is the foundation on which all other aspects of your life are built; without good health, nothing else matters.

Self-care can be difficult because focus and motivation aren’t always things we have access to every day, but when you make self-care a priority in your life, it will give you the drive you need to live better and be healthier.
